To expose the ambiguity around snacks, it is always helpful to start by first defining what is a snack?

The dictionary defines a snack as: a light meal; food eaten between regular meals.

The word snack was first used in1757 and people have been snacking ever since.

Although, one of the oldest snacks (popcorn) has been found in archaeological sites that date back 7000 years showing evidence of popcorn preparation and consumption by ancient indigenous peoples.

Between 1950 and 2000, North America became a nation of snackers.

Manufacturers introduced packaged snacks that catered to cravings for sugar, salt, and fat.

The first commercial snack foods were peanuts and popcorn which were cheap, tasty, filling, and convenient.

Peanut and popcorn vendors sold their products on the streets, at circuses, fairs, and later at sporting events.

One of the most successful snack entrepreneurs was an Italian born peanut vendor named Amedeo Obici.

In 1906, Amedeo (with another Italian immigrant) formed the Planters’ Peanut Company.

By the 1980s, people were consuming snacks on a regular basis and snacking has become part of our everyday lifestyle.

Now as we all know, snacks come in a variety of forms from packaged snack foods and other processed foods to items made from fresh ingredients at home.

Traditionally, snacks are prepared from ingredients commonly without a great deal of preparation.

So with the holidays, sporting events, and social gatherings coming up, you will need to have a strong snack game.
