Although chicken is one of the most versatile and nutritious meats out there, it does get the occasional bad rap.

Due to misinformation and questionable marketing, there are quite a few myths and misconceptions about chicken.

Additionally, we as consumers have become so far removed from raising animals on a farm, it’s hard to know the facts.

Here are the top 4 chicken myths:

Myth #1: Chickens are given hormones and steroids to make them grow faster and bigger (nearly 80% of Canadians believe this myth).

FACT: There are no added hormones or steroids in any chicken meat.

  • The reality? No chicken sold or raised in Canada and the U.S. is given hormones or steroids. In fact, Canada and US has banned all hormones and steroids in poultry since the 1950s. It is true that chickens are bigger and grow faster these days but that is because of proper nutrition, better veterinarian care, better living conditions and good breeding not because of hormones. It is purely a marketing gimmick when the package states “hormone free” or “no added hormones”.

Myth #2: Chickens are genetically modified.

FACT: Chicken are not genetically modified.

  • There are actually no genetically modified animals commercially available. In late 2015, a genetically engineered salmon was the first GMO animal to be approved in the United States but it will not be on the market and available for purchase for a few years.

Myth #3: If a chicken is given antibiotics, then the chicken meat will have antibiotic residue in it (nearly 3/4 of Canadians believe antibiotics are present in most chicken meat).

FACT: There are no antibiotics in the chicken you buy.

  • All the chicken you buy is “antibiotic free” – Canada has strict regulations with respect to antibiotic use and withdrawal times to ensure that chicken reaching the marketplace does not contain residues which is monitored by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The reason why sometimes antibiotics are used is because just like people sometimes animals get sick and treating their illness under veterinarian guidance is an ethical part of animal care.

Myth #4: Chickens are raised in cages.

FACT: No chicken meat you buy is raised in a cage.

  • The majority of chickens raised for meat in the Canada and the U.S. live in large, open structures called houses, where they are free to roam, munch on food, drink water and socialize with other birds.
