With spring just around the corner, it’s time to dust off the barbecue and prepare it for the almighty barbecue season!
You will want to make sure that your barbecue is in proper working order and well maintained especially for that first barbecue event.
Here are 5 steps to making sure your barbecue is ready to go:
Step 1: Check and Clean Your Grill
Start by checking your hoses and tubes and their connections. Take a little soapy water to your hoses, tubes, the regulator, and valves and turn on the propane tank to see if there are any bubbles. If you see bubbles, you probably have a gas leak and need to replace anything that has been damaged. It’s important to also scrub and wash your barbecue down with warm soapy water. Take off the grates and clean them separately with a soft wire brush. Dump any used briquettes, ash and grease.
Step 2: Rust-Proof
A safe way to get the rust off grates is to soak the grates overnight in a vinegar and salt or vinegar and water mixture. You can also use baking soda. Avoid commercial rust removers as these can be toxic. After you have cleaned and dried both sides of the grates, rub vegetable oil on them. Cure them by putting them in the oven at 450 degrees for a few hours. Avoid using a vegetable oil spray as is flammable. If you have rust on the outside of the grill, consider painting it with rustproof metal paint.
Step 3: Buy Fuel
Stock up on propane or charcoal and make sure you keep it in a safe place away from kids and pets. Propane tanks should be stored upright in a cool and shady spot.
Step 4: Clean Up the Area
Sweep out, hose down or power wash the grilling area. Make sure there is nothing flammable around the area like leaves, twigs or toys.
Step 5: Do a Test Run
It’s important to do a test run by grilling a few items for yourself and your family. Try to use all of the burners and any special accessories. Make any necessary changes to improve your grill’s performance before that big barbecue event!
