Tacos are thought to have come from Mexico, long before the Spanish arrived.

Ancient Mexicans used freshly made, soft, flat corn tortillas and gave them fillings like fish and cooked organs.

It was a staple meal that provided vital nutrients and energy to those who consumed it.

Interestingly, the word “taco” is quite new.

It originated from Mexican silver miners in the 18th century.

Gunpowder was wrapped in a paper like a “taquito” and inserted into rocks before detonation.

The first true taco was therefore called “taco de minero” or “miner’s taco.”

For a long time, the Mexican restaurants specializing in tacos (aka Taquerías) were in working-class neighborhoods.

Industrialization brought migrants from all over the country, particularly women, to Mexico City because of the light industry.

Women brought with them their regional cooking skills.

As a result, there were endless varieties of slightly different foods and recipes that created to make what we know today as Mexican cuisine.

It’s not until the early 1900s when Mexican migrants came to North America bringing their delicious Mexican dishes.

At that time, Mexican food was seen as street food and lower-class.

But then in 1962, Glen Bell created Taco Bell and though the taco was already a well-established Mexican food, Taco Bell brought it to the mainstream by building a franchise to sell these tacos countrywide.

Now people who had never eaten Mexican food before, could try out this new and delicious cuisine.

Today, there are several delicious fast-food restaurants to choose from and even more authentic street vendors in every major city.

Tacos have become such an integral part of the North American diet that many people now set a date for “taco night” once a week!
