The Brussels sprout has been providing reliable nourishment to humankind since the Roman days in 1200 BC.

As its name suggests, these nutritious sprouts originate in Brussels Belgium and are enjoyed now all over the world!

We know Brussels sprouts contain many valuable nutrients but in order to get to know our food better, here are some interesting and fun facts about these delicious little green vegetable gems:

  • Two-thirds of the total sprout consumption occurs outside the festive season in the UK and Britons eat more Brussels sprouts than anyone else in Europe.
  • There are more than 110 different varieties of sprouts.
  • The Brussels sprout is supposedly an aid to fertility because it is so high in folic acid.
  • Sprouts contain high levels of vitamins A and C, folic acid and dietary fibre, and can help protect against colon and stomach cancer.
  • An 80g serving of sprouts contains four times more vitamin C than an orange and a cup of cooked Brussels sprouts contains only about 60 calories.
  • Adventurer Stuart Kettell, 49, rolled a Brussels sprout to the top of Mt. Snowdon using only his nose to raise money for Cancer.
