Making your grocery dollar stretch while maximizing the value has never been more important.

And it is also important to spend your hard-earned dollars supporting your local economy.

That way, customers can get the best prices on great products while investing in their own community.

An excellent example of a product with a low price and great value made locally is peameal bacon.

Peameal bacon was originally developed by a Toronto ham and bacon curer, William Davies.

His company would eventually become today’s Maple Leaf Foods.

Historically, it is hard to find many foods that you can say originated in Canada and it doesn’t get more local.

In fact, peameal bacon is soooo Canadian (how Canadian is it?) it is known throughout the world as Canadian bacon.

Here are a some more interesting things about peameal bacon:

🐷 Peameal bacon can eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, served in slices or as an ingredient in a pork dish.

🐷 The name peameal comes from the dried yellow peas that were ground into meal and packed around the meat to preserve it in the Victorian era.

🐷 Peameal bacon is much leaner than regular bacon. The brining process makes it nearly impossible to overcook and it’s both leaner and juicer than regular bacon.

🐷 Cooked peameal bacon can be kept in a freezer with a temperature of 0° F or less for up to one year (not that it will last that long before it’s eaten!)

The low cost of peameal bacon and the ability to use it in a variety of different meals, makes it a go to choice when wanting the most bang for your buck.

There is a great local sale at NoFrills on their Peameal Bacon for $2.49 / lb.
