Inspired by the testimonial of a ZEG Sauces fan, it’s time we discuss the controversial “B” word.

Most times just saying this word will send shivers down the spines of children and has caused many to have nightmares!

The amount of food trauma that has occurred every time this word has been used at the dinner table is colossal.

That’s right, the word I’m talking about is Broccoli!

As adults, we know the great benefits of this tasty vegetable.

But if it weren’t for the haunting parental voice in our heads saying “don’t forget to eat your broccoli!”, we probably wouldn’t be eating this delicious vegetable today.

Broccoli is known as the “Crown Jewel of Nutrition” because it is rich in vitamins and minerals.

It is one of those power packed vegetables that sets it apart from others.

Now if we can just remove the negative stereotype that broccoli tastes awful, children might actually enjoy this fantastic superpowered vegetable.

Here are some interesting facts that will help to remove the bad wrap that broccoli gets:

  • Broccoli is an annual or biennial vegetable belonging to the cabbage family.
  • The word “broccoli” comes from the Italian plural of broccolo which means “the flowering crest of a cabbage”.
  • Broccoli has been around for more than 2000 years.
  • Like the other close relatives of cabbage, broccoli is native to the Mediterranean area and Asia Minor.
  • Broccoli has been considered a very valuable food by Italians since the Roman Empire but when first introduced in England in the mid-18th century, broccoli was referred to as “Italian asparagus.”
  • Broccoli did not become widely popular until the 1920s.
  • Broccoli has a distinctive ‘mustardy’ taste and well-known health benefits.
  • Broccoli is often boiled or steamed but may be eaten raw.
  • The United States is the 3rd largest broccoli producer in the world (after China and India).
  • Heaviest broccoli was grown by John and Mary Evans of Palmer, Alaska, USA in 1993 weighed 15.87 kg (35 lb).
  • Broccoli has been shown to be good for heart health in addition to containing cancer protective compounds. It may also be good for eye health, supporting the immune system, and providing hormonal balance.

Now that we know more about broccoli and why it’s called the Crown Jewel of Nutrition, how can we convince any broccoli pessimists to give it a second try?

Well, you mix it in with other things, that’s how!

By making a broccoli salad for example, people will get the same great nutritional benefits without that strong taste broccoli provides.

Using a salad dressing also helps to blend the flavours, making broccoli salad a great side dish or meal on its own.

Here is a tasty broccoli salad recipe that will bring broccoli back:

Broccoli Salad

  1. Combine 6 cups of broccoli florets, 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese, 2/3 cup of dried cranberries, ½ cup of crumbled bacon, ½ cup of salted sunflower seeds and 1/3 cup diced red onion into a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together ¾ cup of mayonnaise, ¼ cup of sour cream, 3 tablespoons of your favourite ZEG Sauces.
  3. Pour the dressing over the broccoli combination and toss well.
  4. Broccoli salad may be served immediately but for the best flavour, refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. Toss the broccoli salad thoroughly for a second time before serving. Keep the broccoli salad refrigerated if not consuming right away.

Your local Lococo’s has a fantastic sale on Broccoli Crowns for $1.88 / lb.
