The dictionary defines gratitude as: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
But what about if you are specifically grateful for your food? Although being grateful for your food does have the quality of being thankful, we do not show our appreciation nor return kindness to our vegetable allies. Unless of course kindness to a vegetable is planting its seeds for the next generation (good for you). When we think about the availability, high quality, and abundance of food and vegetables we have in Canada and specifically Ontario, it’s not too hard to feel grateful for the bounty we have on our plates every day. And more and more people are showing their gratefulness toward our fantastic variety of locally grown vegetables. With over 3,000,000 vegetarians and vegans in Canada and growing, eating vegetables is not only a healthy choice but also a way of life and sustainability. To highlight our variety, freshness and abundance, right now in Ontario look at all the extraordinary vegetables that are in season: Artichokes, Green Beans, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Swiss Chard, Corn, Cucumber, Garlic, Leeks, Lettuce, Green Onions, Onions, Parsnips, Peppers, Potatoes, Radishes, Rutabagas, Salad Greens, Spinach, Tomatoes, Turnips, Zucchini, Beets, Eggplants, and Kale.
