Did you know that there are actually 5 types of Pacific salmon and 2 types of Atlantic salmon?
Today, Atlantic salmon is typically farmed while Pacific salmon are primarily wild caught.
These classifications and differences make up the great East versus West salmon controversy.
There are the obvious differences as their names suggest: Atlantic salmon are originally from the Atlantic Ocean while Pacific Salmon are from the Pacific Ocean.
Aside from geographical location, Atlantic salmon are more closely related to the brown trout than they are to Pacific salmon.
The Atlantic salmon wears the colours of silver with large, black spots on their gill covers and back.
The Pacific salmon are typically pink and go by the ocean street names of: humpies, chum salmon, dog salmon, red salmon, sockeyes, silver salmon, coho, king salmon, and chinook.
What a polyonymous fish crew!
The beef continues even over their health benefits.
As most of the wild Atlantic salmon stocks were wiped out by overfishing, Atlantic salmon are now considered farmed salmon.
Controversy eddies over the health benefits of eating Atlantic and Pacific salmon but the general consensus is that some salmon is better than no salmon at all!
Both Atlantic and Pacific salmon are high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids that provide well documented benefits for the heart and brain.
Wild salmon is a great choice and farmed salmon is a good alternative.
