When I reminisce about some of the best meals I have had in my life, most (if not all) have been home cooked.
One of those home-cooked great meals was the Sunday tradition of having a roast beef dinner. There is nothing better than sitting around a table with your loved ones, enjoying a perfectly cooked roast beef with all of the fixings! It is a great way to finish the week and a great way to bring people together to share in a meal experience. For generations, we have had roast beef dinners on Sundays. But where did this tradition come from? In Canada, the roast beef dinner tradition was brought to us by English and British immigrants who carried on the tradition from their homelands. For centuries, Sunday roasts have been the essence of English cuisine and part of their national identity. The roast beef dinner is a characteristic national dish of England and holds cultural meaning for the English dating back to the 1731 ballad “The Roast Beef of Old England”. British people have had such a long love affair with the traditional Sunday roast, it is believed to have begun way back in 15th century Britain during the reign of King Henry VII. Every Sunday, after church, his royal guards would enjoy a ritual of freshly roasted beef and this is where the term “Beefeaters” came from! Throughout this time, almost all households from the wealthiest to the poorest, held up this tradition which became a symbol of religious and social importance. For the poorest of families who did not own fireplaces, they would drop off their roasts at their local bakery on the way to church, who would in turn, pop it in their ovens and have it ready in time for their lunch! And nothing was wasted with families eating the leftovers in various forms throughout the week. For many of us, we still hold up this tradition today and even the leftovers can often be better than the original meal! Can you say roast beef sandwich!
