What do Texas, Mexico, Disneyland and Doritos have in common?
They all had a part in creating the modern-day taco salad!
Taco salad is a spectacular blend of two different cuisines.
It has its origins in the state of Texas when Mexicans migrated and brought their rich culture and tradition along.
It was a blend of Anglo, Spanish and Mexican cuisines that gave rise to a brand-new recipe.
And the taco salad was born!
The earliest version of taco salads were called Ta-Cups, and were made of ground beef, beans, sour cream and cheese served in a small bowl made entirely of Fritos.
The creator was none other than the founder of Fritos himself – Elmer Doolin.
Doolin ran a restaurant at Disneyland called Casa de Fritos which was hugely influential in introducing Americans to “Mexican” food.
Doolin added the Ta-Cup to the menu at the restaurant in 1955 and it took off.
Over time, the dish grew in size into the taco bowl we know today.
Later on, the Morales family (which ran Casa de Fritos) also invented another well-known snack food at the restaurant – Doritos chips!
The unique feature of taco salads is the amount of variation you can bring into the dish.
It can fit into any type of cuisine with seasonings and modifications from any part of the world!
So, do not be too surprised if you end up tasting taco salads with distinctively different flavours and aromas in two different parts of the world.
It is not meant to taste the same.
