The almighty cocktail sauce (aka seafood sauce) is one of several types of cold or room temperature sauces often served as part of a dish or as a condiment with other seafoods.
The creation of cocktail sauce is often credited to British celebrity chef Fanny Cradock but cocktail sauces predate her 1967 recipe. For example, Constance Spry published a seafood cocktail using Dublin Bay Prawns in 1956. In fact, seafood cocktails originated in the 19th century in the United States, usually made with oysters or shrimp. And seafood with spiced, cold sauces were a well-established part of the 20th century culinary knowledge. As seafood cocktails popularity expanded, in the 1920s cocktail appetizers (shrimp cocktails) were served in cocktail glasses at home dinner parties. Over the years, several recipe variations have evolved in different countries such as the classic British version called Marie Rose sauce which uses ketchup and mayonnaise or the version from Belgium which has a dash of whiskey. Today, cocktail sauce is most associated with the prawn cocktail but it really can be served with any shellfish. Did you know you can make an amazing cocktail sauce using your favourite ZEG Sauces?
